While the project page states that the filter field should also be in the view's field list (with the caveat that this may no longer be the case), this isn't mentioned at all in the help text for Field with autocomplete results in the filter configuration.
As I just confirmed that the field does in fact need to be in the field list (for Drupal 8 at least), we should:
