Proposal: Drupal Contribution Gamification Initiative

Background

Motivating people and rewarding them to do contribution is a long standing challenge in the Drupal community.

During DrupalCon Europe - Amsterdam 2019 the opening keynote was about Initiatives where 10 initiatives were presented. One of the most standing out part was the "we need you". On the following day Paul Johnson had a presentation (https://drupal.kuoni-congress.info/2019/program/abstract/95) about how to start contributing without Code. The following day Dries talked about how promoting "makers" will have a massive impact on Drupal contributions.

Problem

We need more, higher variety of contributors and we need more engagement. Currently it's not easy and not too rewarding for non-coders to engage and coders do not necessarily want to spend coding time on smaller, less creditable contributions. Contributing should be more fun and rewarding.

Proposed resolution

Create a rich, vivid landscape of Badges for Contribution activities.

Not in scope

This proposal is not for changing the contribution crediting system. To a certain extent it builds on top of it as the credit system gives measurable data which can be used.

This isn't something core could do, it would have to be a Drupal Association initiative. But given where things stand, I don't think it aligns with the current DA strategy. Still, giving credit for those who commented with thoughtful suggestions :)
