In the module settings, there is a checkbox "Clone publication status of original?". If this is not checked, then the published status will default to whatever it is for new nodes of that type. But what I want is another option to just have unpublished unchecked for cloned node, no matter what the default published status is for that content type.
The cloned_node alter hook cannot be used for this either, since the module runs that alter hook before it sets the publish status on the cloned node object.

It's likely this issue predates Contrib.social: some issue and comment data are missing.
In my opinion, this is a very big usability improvement. Strange that this feature, which has low impact on the code, is not getting into the module.
When cloning nodes with translations, you don't want any incorrect translations being published.
