When editing the layout for a content view mode, allow picking a specific node to use as the preview

Problem/Motivation

Discussing the layout builder at Drupaldelphia BoF.

When editing the layout for a view mode you get dummy content applied that may not be helpful to understand how the real content will look.

Proposed resolution

Add an EntityReference autocomplete box that allows selecting a node (or other entity) for the user to (temporarily?) use as the content to be shown while editing the layout. Ideally change the content or refresh the display when a new node is picked - allowing the site builder to check how the layout will work with different examples of the content.

This has been open for 6 years now with no real interest in implementation. I'm thinking we should close this and suggest it be built in contrib if people are interested in this. I'm not sure there is enough interest to justify adding this to core.

Marking as postponed for the moment for others to give thoughts before closing
