"We as a community have to move away from Slack."

#2490332: Evaluate whether to replace drupal IRC channels with another communication medium β†’
issue was solved as moving away from IRC, but missed the opportunity to agree on a chat client the Drupal community want to use.
Therefore I am opening the floodgate again, as we deserve a better communication channel. I think we have to decide on this, otherwise the community will go with many different chat clients sooner or later..
It is interesting to read the comments on the above issue after one year. It seems many of the concerns raised does not really matter any more, as the community is using Slack. Maybe to make a decision will be much easier now.

This seems like an up to date list of slack replacements:
https://www.coactivate.org/projects/disintermedia/slacking-off

Maybe we should create a poll and run it for some months, where Drupal developers (drupal.org users) can choose up to 3 chat clients with order of preference. (3 because I run 3 different chat clients at the same time every day). Every chat client should be described, why/why not would be a good match for the Drupal community. That poll result would be interesting..

Thanks for sharing @rodrigoaguilera. It's now clear that the Drupal community has to keep on maintaining free, self-hosted solutions such as https://www.drupal.org/forum β†’ and Matrix/DrupalChat for chat ( #2954073: Promote Rocket Chat instance as an alternative to Slack β†’ ). Trusting proprietary and third-party services such as Slack or StackExchange.com to behave ethically is naΓ―ve.

StackExchange recently announced a close cooperation with OpenAI, angering the community deeply. One comment:

Most replies focus on certain process and legal aspects. What I want to bring up is the emotional aspects. Irrespective of whether the license agreement allows this to be done with our content or not, the whole thing is triggering an emotional response with me, and it's not a good one.

I feel violated, cheated upon, betrayed, and exploited.

While we're still slacking and waiting for something here to start the migration :) - want to mention that RocketChat has already joined the Matrix family (two years ago, actually) - here is the announcement: https://matrix.org/blog/2022/05/30/welcoming-rocket-chat-to-matrix/

So, we have https://drupalchat.me/ that is already Matrix-native!

Thanks for sharing @murz! I don't know anything about the technologies behind these chat solutions, but I think as an evaluator or just casually interested user (such as myself), it would be awesome if the Issue Summary got updated, and some more info was added.

    It could be for example:

    • Adding the great news you just shared, and what difference it makes for the end user and infrastructure
    • Some of the problems about using Slack, like content not indexed in search engines, text erased from chats after a while, used for AI training, etc.
    • Scenarios for different proposed solutions
    • ... and so on

I dug a bit and found the comment and link to a proposed Matrix project, which seems like useful info, so I added it in the Issue summary, but maybe the Issue Summary could be expanded? Thanks!

From my side, the main question about Slack - is who pays for the current Slack’s Pro Plan on the Drupal Slack workspace - Drupal Association? And how much are these expenses?

If this is €6.75 per person/month, as described on the page https://app.slack.com/plans/T06GX3JTS - this is a huge expense! So, just switching from Slack to Matrix will give us a lot of savings!

If the Slack Pro Plan is provided for free, then this migration is not urgent, but still good to have. At least, it can be seamless, without forcing current users to leave slack, but just configure bridges, so new users and Matrix/RocketChat/IRC/Telegram fans can start chatting with Drupal Slack users using their current accounts.

Thanks for clarifying. I think it would help get everyone looking at this up to speed much faster, if you could add some text under "Remaining tasks", if you have time?

For example, your last sentence sounds extremely interesting, so perhaps you could list minimum required tasks to make it happen? Also, there are more suggestions for possible subjects to cover in my previous comment.
