Restrict displayed exposed filter options to actual, available results

I was wondering if there already a way either within core views, or the BEF module, to restrict displayed exposed filters to only showing options pertinent to actual, available results.

Use case: I have a location taxonomy used in a filter to allow the user to show all of, for example, "restaurants, wine shops". The taxonomy also includes child options under restaurants for "burger places, italian, korean, and ethiopian". However, no korean or ethiopian restaurants have yet been added, so those two options shouldn't show up yet for users to filter by.

I found the views selective filters → module - but it doesn't yet have a stable (or even alpha) d8 release, and there's no guarantee it will be compatible in use with BEF.
