I suggest to use Field Group Background → module. It allows to select any image field as a background and add any inline styles / wrapper classes.
Regarding using the background images formatter module → with this module, the parallax effect is not as smooth as other parallax implementations? I've implemented this module, along with BIF and paragraphs, on my site www.dowellconsulting.com - and although it seems to work alright, I've noticed the effect isn't quite as smooth and pleasing as I've seen on other sites. If you'd like some examples I can track some down and send you the links.
