View mode pages use the parent entity canonical URL, so they are considered duplicate content by search engines

Created on 5 May 2017, about 7 years ago
Updated 15 August 2023, 11 months ago

Problem/Motivation

When viewing an entity through View Mode Page, the canonical meta tag refers to the entity canonical url. This is problematic when publishing public content, since search engines will consider the page duplicate content while it actually an independent page.

Steps to reproduce

Assume the View Mode Page pattern /%/specifications for the path products/lawn-mower

Expected canonical tag:
products/lawn-mower/specifications

Actual canonical tag:
products/lawn-mower

Proposed resolution

Either:

  1. Use a unique canonical url per View Mode Page path
  2. Remove the default canonical url from the entity, so search engines will not assume duplicate content

Remaining tasks

  1. Write a patch
  2. Review
  3. Commit
