Too difficult to locate Custom Block on Block Layout page

I have been frustrated at the difficulty in locating my custom blocks within the Block Layout screen. I read a bunch of the open issues about block-related UX issues, but couldn't quite find my particular concerns addressed anywhere.

Reproducing the problem

  • Go to Structure > Block Layout > Add Custom Block (/block/add). Let's give it a title/description of "XYZ"
  • After creating the block, it brings me to the Block Configure screen. By default the title field is set to "xyz".. my custom block's description.
I change this to a custom title and save.
  • That brings me to the Block Layout screen, highlighting the newly added block instance in green. Great! But it does not say "xyz" anywhere on Block Layout. In the future, how would I locate that custom block in Block Layout, if all I know is the custom block's description ("xyz") ?

I had a customer run into this scenario today. They wanted to know where a particular custom block was being used (which pages it was assigned to). But.. in order to do that, you have to locate that block on the Block Layout screen knowing only the block description, but the block description is not shown on Block Layout; it only shows the block *titles*. And those titles could be totally different from whatever the blocks' descriptions are.

I eventually found it by using Chrome's CTRL+F to look for certain keywords.. after trying to configure a half dozen blocks I finally found the right one. I attached screenshots of the process.

My proposed solution is along the lines of some early D8 UX proposals I saw (I saw some of the mockups). I would like to see the block descriptions alongside the block titles on Block Layout. I attached screenshots of how it looks in 8.2.3 vs how I propose it could look with block descriptions included. Perhaps the block descriptions could be optional.. and could be toggled on and off, so people could preserve the clutter-free look except when they need to hunt down a particular block instance (like I described above).

Now that block_content is moved to content has it got any easier?
