Image derivative generation not working for private files on shared host

Created on 13 September 2016, over 8 years ago
Updated 7 October 2023, about 1 year ago

When uploading images for content types with an image field with "private storage", the generation of derivative images (thumbnails, image styles small/medium/large) does not work when drupal is running on a shared hosting environment.

For example, when field display is configured to "Image Style: Medium", only a placeholder with alt-text is shown, and the error message in the log looks like:

This came up as a triage target for the Bug Smash Initiative.

Thanks for reporting this issue. We rely on issue reports like this one to resolve bugs and improve Drupal core.

I suspect the issue here may be similar to #1109312: Image derivatives (image cache files such as thumbnails or custom styles) are not created when clean URLs are enabled β†’ in that it revolves around server configuration (apache/nginx).

Without further details this bug cannot be addressed. Please provide a detailed list of steps to reproduce, along with the relevant apache/nginx configurations.

As there has been no activity here for 6 years I will mark this as Postponed (maintainer needs more info). If we don't receive additional information to help with the issue, it may be closed after three months.

As part of the Bug Smash Initiative, we are triaging issues that are marked "Postponed (maintainer needs more info)". This issue was marked "Postponed (maintainer needs more info)" more than 4 months ago.

Since we need additional information for this issue to progress, I'm marking the issue "Closed (cannot reproduce)". If anyone can provide complete steps to reproduce the issue (starting from "Install Drupal core"), document those steps in the issue summary and set the issue status back to "Active" [or "Needs Work" if it has a patch, etc.].

    Thanks!
