Add commenting to Available Updates report

Under the "List" category at admin/reports/updates (for "Available Updates"), it would be useful to include an optional comment field per module and theme. This can be done, perhaps, through an AJAX mechanism to reveal the empty field when initially selected for use and during later page loads if the field is already populated.

The objective of this limited comment field is to leave notes for maintainers as to why a certain theme or module should remain at a certain version, when a module or theme is safe to update, for a URL leading to more elaborate site documentation regarding that installed component, etc.

Having worked at multiple institutions where Drupal is in heavy use and where custom programming and configurations have been introduced, external documentation or update workflows alone are not a guarantee that a mistake or oversight won't be made. The ability to add comments/notices in the primary report of available module and theme updates would greatly strengthen a team's awareness of circumstances when sharing site management.

If the Available Updates report is not deemed an appropriate destination for such a feature, please suggest a more suitable location to add this same functionality while still being useful. Available Updates seems to be the most fitting.

    @jsheldon, thanks for the idea!

    I discussed this with catch and lauriii.

    It was pointed out that browser extension could be used to allow one to make notes on the page. But for multiple users, a more complete implementation of would require storage etc and more work.

    There hasn't been support for this idea from others in the 8 years it has been open. Also, there has been recent work and a survey on the update system and this problem did not come up. The work on the results of that survey is being done in 🌱 Improve the update experience Active . You are welcome to express your concerns about the update page and possible solutions over there.

    Therefore, in the end we agree this can be closed. It can always be re-opened if there is interest.
