It would be useful to be able to select the "Language layout" (Asian / Eastern / Western) per entity by having an extra select field/radio buttons as pert of the name field widget.
Is that something that is feasible or would it add too much complexity?

It's likely this issue predates Contrib.social: some issue and comment data are missing.
I think this could be implemented using 3rd party settings and additional code. I think ✨ Translate name formats by language Active is a better solution.
In Drupal 8+, the name field formatter has a format setting. You can control how each field is formatted.
