This was requested already for just the first sentence ( #1977818: add a trim option to trim only up to the first sentence → ). Denied b/c it's "too hard". And I agree that it wouldn't be very robust.
But instead of offering to trim at precisely the first sentence, here the offer is to break at the nearest "sentence-terminating punctuation". It is "easier" basically because you are offering to do less. You can put some warning in there about it not necessarily working in all cases, but since it works "in most cases", it is more useful.
