WordPress does this neat thing where out of the box you get several blocks on the dashboard that tie you directly back into their upstream community: WordPress Blog shows official communication, "Other WordPress News" offers their equivalent of Drupal Planet, and so on.
Since our dashboard needs content, and since we have a news feed at http://drupal.org/news that talks about things like new core releases, how to get involved in Drupal, and upcoming Drupal events, this seems like a nice thing to point people at to give them an "in" into the community.
