I rebuilt the codebase of the site from scratch, but used the same database and that fixed the fix the problem, whatever it was. Apparently it was in the filesystem even though I run the site with composer and quadruple checked all file permissions, among other efforts. 

desierto → created an issue.

The patch in #3 and #4 fixed the problem right up. Hopefully the next version can come out soon to save a lot of headaches, esp. for the less techie. Thanks for everyone's work.
