I would really like to see this feature implemented. The key advantage of having the collapsible categories is if you have a lot of blocks per category, the author doesn't need to scroll a ton to see all available categories. Providing the ability to start categories as collapsed will make items more discoverable.
Adding the ability to choose what blocks are available with Direct Add would improve this module greatly. I foresee using Direct Add to provide authors quick access to the most commonly used blocks, and then utilizing Layout Builder Browser → to provide the full set of available components.
I would recommend reviewing Layout Builder Browser's configuration pages to provide a similar experience. It's not necessary to include categories. But the ability to curate the available blocks and their order would great.
