Hi @lobsterr yes the field_ui module is available. It does appear that this error happens without the group media module being enabled as well, so I think this particular issue can be closed...as I think it's a Group module issue

I've patched this successfully on my Drupal 9 site, but it fails when I try to upgrade to Drupal 10. I'm at a loss... how am I supposed to continue using this?

oh goodness, I feel silly now. The way you said it makes total sense, but thats definitely not how I thought it would work when I created it. Thanks for the clarification!
