I'd like to submit a new Drupal 6 module for review. I named it 'digitalib': Digitalib is an open source module that provides a platform for archiving, preserving, managing and publishing on the internet various multimedia material. It is design for cataloging using the interoperable online metadata standard Dublin Core, and then having the flexibility required by this standard.
With Digitalib you can:
- Create different collections containing digitized resources, like photos, images, documents, video, audio.
- Customize fields in the collections. Add new fields, new types, edit, delete, specify default values that will put the resources faster. Each collection can have different fields.
- Catalog the resources using the Dublin Core standard.
- Search within the collections through a system of advanced research.
- Automatically generate Dublin Core and MAG diagrams for resources.
The idea is to give librarians and other who want to manage digital assets a 'ready-to-use product'. The focus is on metadata and search. The cataloging follows the standard Dublin Core, allowing as required the possibility to define the fields of cataloging and to duplicate them.
The search engine allows basic and advanced searches. The basic search is a research done simultaneously on all the available fields. The advanced search can be made on individual cataloging fields. The system administrator can decide if a field can be searched or not, which fields appear in the preview of the resource, which fields can be selected to order the resource. The advanced search system was developed in collaboration with professional librarians.
A first version of the module, working on Drupal 5, is still running for the public library of Trento, Italy (http://www.catinabib.it/). The actual version is being installed on http://www.salornobiblio.it/, the site of the public library of Salorno - Italy, but the site is not yet open.
You can see the module on the demo site http://www.loogut.net/digitalib/. Here you can create a new account obtaining an access as librarian, with the possibility to create and modify collections and resources, and to download the source code.
