Backref from User reference?

Is there any way to maintain integrity, or a back reference link at least, between a custom cck content type and a drupal user object? I currently have a custom type that represents a 'person' that contains lots of info about a 'person' and now want to link it to a drupal user (although it's an optional link, some 'people' won't have users). I don't want to use the profile module because I need more types than it provides; my 'person' type has nodereferences to other types, for example.

I'm also using the noderelationship module, which is how I'm implementing backref's for nodereference fields, but of course, it doesn't support backref's to user reference fields, only to node reference fields.

I did check out the content_profile module, which looked promising, but then I couldn't figure out how to allow some 'people' type to not have drupal users, or how to add a drupal user and then associate to an already existing 'person' type.

Any suggestions on how to get the functionality I'm after?

Thanks,
