Brief Description of Project:

Drupal is a well known and amongst the most flexible and extensible opensource Content Management Systems. It's flexible structured entity based software architecture and its collaborative and interoprable nature of its extensions called modules allow Drupal to also be used as a framework for building business applications. This lead naturally to AI in two ways:

- As a content management system used by many across the world including large government organisations such as the European Commission, adding AI functionality into an existing site and platform with their data, content model and permissions systems is easier than starting with a completely new platform.

- It's strutured and normalised approach to data. (For example, date fields use the date module and everything in the ecosystem can assume a consistent struture for handling dates), Drupal becomes a fantastic AI orchestration platform in and of itself. Unlike other frameworks such as OpenAI Agent framework, it has a user interface focused on allowing non-developers to both create and understand its AI workflows and Agentic workflows.

As a result the Drupal community has come together to found the official Drupal AI Initiative. Now 15 organisations across Drupal (and more incoming) are committing ongoing developer resources, other staffing resources and income to help push true Open Source AI features in Drupal and AI orchestration that is not owned and controlled by one specific company. This has the full support of the Drupal Association, its CEO Tim Doyle and Drupals founder, Dries Buytaert.

We have an extensive roadmap but it including an AI abstraction layer for connecting to multiple providers, automators - a langchain style deterministic workflow, ECA, a graph based approach to AI workflows including deterministic actions and MCP, AI search for RAG, Agents with tools and a host of end-user specific agent flows such as landing page builders, accessibility, fact checking etc.

In January 15th 2025 we launched the newest version of Drupal called Drupal CMS. This came bundled with AI Agents that helped users create content types and structure in their site. Instead of focusing on using AI for mere content generation or saving copying and pasting, we used AI to help overcome one of Drupal's largest perceived issues of its user interface whilst allowing it to keep its largest selling point, its flexibility. We tested these with the University of Edinburgh and found it helped even AI skeptics get stuck into the interface.

We have been working with a number of organisations that care about open source especially in government such as the United Nations, UK Councils and the European Commission.

If there are other people working with you on this project, please list their names here, and what role they will play in the project:

There are countless others involved in this project. We recently had 140 individual contributors to a patch to just the AI module but the AI Initiative includes more than just the one module and is an ecosystem of functionality being added to Drupal. If we receive this funding, it will ultimately be managed by the Drupal AI Initiative itself and given out based on the need and value of each person's use-case.

A list of names of developers and individuals who are committed to the project can be found in our Iniative Tracker here: https://www.drupalstarforge.ai/

How would you use API credits for your project? *

We have a number of planned uses for the project that depending on the amount allocated we will decide how to allocate the credits most effectively.

- Our primary goal will be to provide some credits to our "Makers" to help them with building out the AI functionality (testing it) and perhaps coding it (though we will likely use it less for that).
- We have created extensive LLM tests that need to run LLM calls for our core agents that have shipped with Drupal CMS and these credits will help run them in a CI/CD automated environment that will assist ongoing agentic development so that improvements to core prompts won't cause regressions.
- We will have a trial experience on drupal.org that allows people to test and try out specific AI functionality in short lived containers with limited credits so people can get started with seeing the value right away without complex keys. (Examples of this are the AI features on www.drupalforge.org and try.amazee.io).
