When setting up a PP connection, and selecting the first option for the taxonomy root level (Every taxonomy becomes a PoolParty Project), the syncing times out without getting any terms.
After configuring the PP connection, the config page shows this error:

This actually does use batch, but takes a while to load it, and seems to hang first.
On previous attemps, with ES selected as a language to sync, it would hang after a few minutes and then crash.
It's difficult to tell whether it will work or not because there is no indication of activity until you see the batch or an error.
