The datepicker widget defaults to rendering above the input unless there isn't enough room and it will be underneath.
I think it makes sense to force it to render below, so it is more consistent with other select widgets.
This could potentially be a setting, adding more config options to the plugin form.
The other issue I have is that for a value like date, we don't need a 30 char input field. Should be customized per filter type.

Here's a start for the orientation and year filter.
With ajax enabled in the view, the date picker pops open again after the refresh.
I tried to use autoclose: true, but it gets reopened. I'm wondering if using once would prevent this from happening.
