I suspect that if you try indexing field_sd_date_range you will find that this is actually the starting timestamp.
The Start timestamp does not seem to be exposed to the Search API for indexing. Only the End timestamp. These are the fields I see for Smart Date Range:
(-) Date Range (field_sd_date_range)
Duration, in minutes (field_sd_date_range:duration)
End timestamp value (field_sd_date_range:end_value)
RRule ID (field_sd_date_range:rrule)
RRule Index (field_sd_date_range:rrule_index)
Timezone (field_sd_date_range:timezone)
