De-emphasize most items on Drupal core download page

Created on 6 June 2025, 21 days ago

Problem/Motivation

Drupal core has a LOT of download options.

Steps to reproduce

Proposed resolution

Everything except the first dark blue item and the betas should not have the short description, the highlight button, and should go down to normal text size with CSS.

We might also want to de-redundify the beta sections a bit, but I think that can wait for the new site potentially. It's the not having a clear primary action that's a bigger deal.

should not have the short description

I'm not sure about this. This is, as far as I know, the only place in the UI the short description is used, and it is still relevant info for choosing the download. I might instead propose something like:

    Drupal 11.0.13
Drupal 11.0.x will receive security coverage until June 2025 when Drupal 11.2.0 is released.

    Drupal 10.4.8
Actively maintained with bugfixes and forwards compatibility backports every six months. Use this version if you already have a Drupal 10 site, until you're ready to update to 11.x.

    (Etc.)

#4 looks OK to me too, we can always make the 10.x short descriptions shorter.

Agreed, I had already considered proposing that as well for the maintenance minor in particular.

Agreed we should keep the short descriptions for all, and make them more concise & accurate. If some descriptions really shouldnโ€™t be there, should be able to edit the release to remove them. Some explanation for showing older versions makes sense to me.

Proposed pseudo-mockup for a designer to laugh over, cry a little, and then tweak:

    Drupal 11.0.13
Drupal 11.0.x will receive security coverage until June 2025 when Drupal 11.2.0 is released.

    Drupal 10.4.8
Use this actively maintained version if you already have a Drupal 10 site, until you're ready to update to 11.x.

    Drupal 10.3.14
Drupal 10.3.x will receive security coverage until June 2025 when Drupal 10.5.0 is released.

    Drupal 10.5.0-beta1
Drupal 10.5.x is the next maintenance minor series for sites still on Drupal 10. This beta is provided for testing.

Obviously the alignment is weird going back and forth from buttons to inline, but maybe some headers or something, or something other a design-sensible person could do with a light CSS or content tweak.

I also proposed the short description change to the full RM team for review, since I think it should happen regardless of this issue.

The short descriptions can be updated by core release managers.

Looks great IMHO, thanks a lot!

    Much better thank you!
