Hi Gin team & Drupal community,
As a UX/UI designer working extensively with Drupal, I've really enjoyed using the Gin Admin Theme for its modern aesthetics and improved UX. However, I’ve noticed that there isn’t a design system supporting Gin—no Figma library or centralized UI kit to reference. From what I gather, the theme was developed using a “design in browser” approach, which makes sense for rapid iteration, but it also creates a missed opportunity for designers and developers alike to collaborate more efficiently.
I'd love to propose the creation of a design system for Gin, with the intention of sharing it with the wider Drupal community.
Why a design system for Gin?
Having a well-defined design system would bring a number of benefits:
- Design-to-dev handoff: Designers working on custom admin dashboards or editorial experiences could align better with Gin’s look and feel from the outset.
- Faster prototyping: A Figma library or similar tool would allow UX/UI designers to prototype directly with Gin components, reducing guesswork and rework.
- Consistency: A centralized system ensures visual and behavioral consistency across all admin interfaces using Gin.
- Flexibility for agencies and teams: Many teams (mine included) customize the admin UI for clients. A component-based system would make that easier and more scalable.
- Community contribution: With a shared system, contributors could align on visual standards when submitting patches, new features, or themes.
What I’d like to do
I'm volunteering to initiate this effort—starting with a Figma-based UI kit that reflects the current Gin interface. Eventually, it could evolve to include:
- A full component library
- Theming tokens (spacing, colors, typography)
- Design guidelines for layout and interactions
I’d love to hear from maintainers and community members:
- Would this be something you'd support?
- Is there already work in progress I could align with?
- Are there specific guidelines or processes you'd want me to follow to ensure this integrates well with Gin’s ongoing development?
Thanks for your time, and thanks for all the great work on Gin!
Best,
Kirill
