Difference with Dupe Detect and possible combining efforts?

These two modules appear to serve the save purpose:

• Media Duplicates →
• Media Dupe Detect →

Is there a fundamental difference in how these modules either detect duplicates (I understand Dupe uses hashes, but suspect Duplicates also does) or other that would warrant them remaining separate? Or is there potential for assessing the best implementations, extra features, etc. of both and consolidating efforts into one best recommended module?
