One general comment, in case this is not clear: Assertions should be used during development, an assert() statement should have no effect (no WSOD) on a production environment.
I opted for removing the category, since that means the user has a good instinct for how to categorize this type of field (is it Media? Reference? File Upload?). By removing the field type category altogether, the UI will "float" the "Calendar Download" field category to the top of the list and present it together with other field type categories. That seems best for me at the moment.
The new PR (!25) should resolve this issue, happy to hear if it does, then I can close this issue.
