Updates and Update Extension tabs don't belong under Appearance

Created on 21 February 2025, about 2 months ago

Problem/Motivation

There are two tabs under the Appearance menu that have nothing to do with appearance, which are duplicates found under the Extend menu. That's confusing for new users.

Steps to reproduce

Base Drupal CMS install, no content types and no Recipes installed.
Click on the Appearance menu item.

I see the following interface.

With four menu tabs:

  1. List - this is the default tab and lists all the themes. Yup, that's what I expected as a new user.
  2. Update - that lists all modules that need updating. I know a theme is a technically an extension, but what's listed under here was the two modules I needed to update and I am on the "Appearance" menu. It's got nothing to do with themes. I appreciate this is the same as Drupal core, but will be confusing for new Drupal CMS users.
  3. Update Extensions - same as Update. Nothing to do with themes.
  4. Settings - theme settings. Yup, we're back to the settings for themes, which is what I would expect.

The two middle options don't seem to belong here or at least not with the functionality they provide. They are exactly the same as the two of the six options presented under the "Extend" menu option, so are also duplicate menu items.

Proposed resolution

Change the tab labels and the functionality to make their usage clearer to new users with the labels matching the functionality.

User interface changes

Change tabs to read "Update" and just list themes, and the "Update Themes" and just list themes to update.
