Drupal CMS generator tag

Created on 2 February 2025, 3 months ago

Problem/Motivation

I may have missed a discussion elsewhere where the decision was made not to have a specific Drupal CMS generator tag. But the first time I installed Drupal CMS after January 15, 2025, I found that the generator tag is a generic Drupal 11.

<meta name="Generator" content="Drupal 11 (https://www.drupal.org)">

Steps to reproduce

Install Drupal CMS and take a look at the source code of a page.

Proposed resolution

From a marketing perspective, we make it impossible to count the installation of Drupal CMS if there is no specific generator tag.

    We're planning to use telemetry to get usage stats. I think it should stay as-is since it is built on Drupal 11?

    There are many reasons to have a more specific generator tag. It isn't just the Drupal.org numbers that folks want to look at.

    It's a bit repetitive, but I'd suggest:
    </noscript><meta name="Generator" content="Drupal 11 - Drupal CMS (https://www.drupal.org)">

    I do think it would be worth being able to identify in a tool like an open source version of Wappalyzer - https://github.com/HTTPArchive/wappalyzer
