Update on 3rd party tracking and recommendations

Created on 20 November 2024, 2 days ago

I'm following up on a few privacy/sharing concerns discussed a while back for Drupal 6/7 and AddToAny version 6. This hasn't been discussed for any newer versions of Drupal 8+ or AddToAny version 7 or 2+.

My team is trying to assess social media integration options and recently came across Better Social Share β†’ - a relatively newer it appears module that appears more secure and transparent.

Is there a reason a simple on/off to allow/permit tracking boolean checkbox for AddToAny sponsored third party services was never implemented?

This appears to be the most recent/best recommendation for preventing third party access, but no idea if this is still relevant and works with recent versions of the module.
AddToAny module can be used to provide links to 3rd-party services β†’

Hoping this sheds some light and drives some discussion, as this module is fairly widely used, but there isn't any clear disclaimer/information on the module description page that it still applies these reporting trackers.

AddToAny has a genuinely good privacy policy and doesn't load third party cookies/content by default.

Third party buttons such as the Facebook Like button are optional (and generally not recommended). Simply avoid using those buttons and you're good to go.

Is there a reason a simple on/off to allow/permit tracking boolean checkbox for AddToAny sponsored third party services was never implemented?

There was a checkbox over a decade ago when it was useful, and it was removed a few years ago since AddToAny wasn't loading third party stuff by default.

The outdated page you linked to was relevant for about 1 year back in 2011/2012. I'll update it to avoid confusion. The module's current documentation is here β†’ .
