The icon for the content type on standalone content pages is often best displayed outside the content area itself, such as next to the page title.

And CTools' Entity View feature would require configuring an 'Icon' view mode that does nothing but display our pseudofield for every content type.
Allow placing a block with the content item that will show on any pages with content that has an icon configured in Type Tray.
