Drupal terminology quiz

Created on 15 October 2024, about 2 months ago

Problem/Motivation

The Drupalisms working group (@dead_arm, @emma-horrell, @aaronmchale, @worldlinemine, @jurgenhaas, @rkoller) created a Drupal terminology quiz ahead of DrupalCon Barcelona 2024 in order to test our assumption that Drupal's current terminology is confusing for people of all skill levels and Drupal experience. The results of the quiz, feedback that participants include in the quiz, and any additional feedback participants add in various channels, will help us understand and clarify the problem Drupal’s terminology poses.

Quiz background

Quiz creation process and initial testing

We wrote 53 initial questions that gathered terminology concepts that were already highlighted in the BoF at DrupalCon Lille 2023, previous meet ups, Drupal Dojo Austin, Lean coffee call Drupal user group Munich, Drupalisms issue, and usability meetings.

  • First internal review of questions
    • Filtered out questions that covered too many concepts
    • tried to make sure that each questions covered a single stand-alone concept
    • wanted to cover as many topics as possible
    • mainly covered the Drupal administration UI
    • wanted to have about an equal number of true and false
    • crafted simple questions over complex or multi-part questions
  • How we selected the questions
    • Asynchronous dot voting on questions
    • Chose to set a limit of 20 questions because we didn’t want the quiz to have too many
  • Conducted initial tester feedback of the quiz
    • Cognitive interview with experienced Drupal user (and non-native English speaker)
    • @jurgenhaas to test his perception of the questions
  • Second internal review of questions
    • After we received initial feedback, we met to review the questions again.
    • We refined the list of questions, the wording, and chose to replace some of the questions that were repetitive using a similar approach as the first internal review.

Quiz participation

We set a quiz participant response goal to reach a diverse group of people with as many participants as possible, and represent demographics across languages spoken, Drupal experience levels, and self-identified roles.
We posted to Linkedin, and the Drupal Association (DA) extended the reach of the post.
We asked people who came to the DrupalCon Barcelona Drupalisms Birds of a Feather session to take the quiz.
After DrupalCon Barcelona we outlined sharing the link in the various community slack groups.
