Trim URL field display to 40 letters

Problem/Motivation

In D7 the reports page URL field was trimmed to 40 letters as the table was otherwise flowing outside of the visible area. Very long links make the table tooo wide. I tried "Trim this field to a maximum number of characters" with 40 letters (like D7) and "Trim only on a word boundary" disabled, but then I only see "...". I guess the formater plugin does not support trimming properly? Can this re-implemented, please? The extra large table is moving outside of my screen... :-(
