Is a licence needed for this module?

Yes a license is needed, but not one from CKE5, but from Wiris. To this day I have not figured out how the licensing exactly works, but I think it's something with URL whitelisting.

Also noticed their website is updated so will see if I can find more info about that.

Where do you see the claim they are using this module? Can't seem to find that on the website or docs.

Aha thank you for clarifying! The claim was via email with CKSource support, but I must admit we found it a bit strange.
