Saving node after loading it doesn't seem to work

Not sure, what's wrong, but it could be that Drupal's save function is smart enough to not do anything, if the entity (here: node/59) hasn't changed. You could try that by changing one of the fields, e.g. adding a dummy character to the title, before saving it.
