menus expand inline rather than drop down

Problem/Motivation

I have a new site with a simple menu for navigation. Some menu items have children, no grandchildren only 2 levels in all.
Parent items (lvl1) are set as 'show expanded' and children are not. But the issue is not the expansion, it's the display/rendering of the children.
(using DPXR theme only, no DPXR builder or other additions)

Steps to reproduce

Create a simple Drupal menu with items on 2 levels
Place the menu in the 'navigation' or 'navigation collapsible' region of the DPXR theme
expand one of the items with children : childrens appear on the right of the parent instead of below. No dropdown menu.

I could not find any documentation clearly explaining how the menu is supposed to work with dprx theme, nor which block regions it's supposed to be placed in.

( I also tried using the superfish version of the menu . It displays in the area and offers a dropdown that works -see image dpxr_menus_02.png - but it is hidden on forms and views pages so not useable and I can't figure out why either. Standard menu shows in the same region and with the same config. )

Proposed resolution

Fix the standard drupal menus in 'navigation' region so the children drop down instead of being displayed next to the parent in the region
Provide documentation on the set up of menus using DPXR theme
