MidCamp has a subcommittee focused on accessibility for physical and digital spaces for the event. Andrew Olson (https://www.linkedin.com/in/andrewozone/) and Phil Alonso (https://www.linkedin.com/in/philipalonso/) were co-leads for this year and attended planning meetings throughout the year. Tearyne Almendariz (https://www.linkedin.com/in/tearyne/) also provided important input for this yearโs event.
MidCamp uses this venue checklist to ensure equal access for attendees. For social events and our main venue, we make sure all spaces have accessibility features that will accommodate most attendees. We strive to provide ample signage and also use demarcated walking lanes that allow all attendees to more easily move throughout our spaces. These access lanes, marked out with blue tape, are throughout the event to make sure thereโs always a path for people with disabilities and for everyone else at the event. MidCamp provides live captioning displayed on monitors for our main session rooms to the benefit of everyone, not only people that are hard of hearing. Volunteers sit at the front of the room and use laptop computers to display live captioning on the monitors. More information on live captioning can be found on Github.
During the opening remarks, we discuss accessibility and set expectations with attendees on our accessibility commitment. We identify volunteers that attendees can contact to discuss accommodations or needs as they arise throughout the event.
When attendees purchase tickets through our online form, we ask if they have accessibility needs. All responses are followed up via email to learn more about the requested accommodations. An accessibility audit has been performed on midcamp.org ๐ MidCamp 2025 Website - Accessibility Audit Active , however, the remediation fixes were not implemented in time for the event. TOn contribution day, we will present this as an opportunity for people to give back to the Drupal community. For website administrators, we have added the Editoria11y module โ . Editoria11y, which stands for "editorial accessibility ally", is an accessibility checker that allows MidCamp content editors to review pages directly within the Drupal interface, highlighting potential accessibility issues and suggesting fixes to make our website more accessible to users with disabilities; essentially acting as a real-time accessibility checker for editors while they create content. Lastly, we have an accessibility page on the website and encourage people to contact us directly if they experience any difficulty in accessing the MidCamp website.
