Composer error 'dist key should be specified as ...'

Problem/Motivation

When I try to update this package (or indeed any package) I get this:

> Package weitzman/drupal-test-traits's dist key should be specified as {"type": ..., "url": ..., "reference": ..., "shasum": ...},
{"type":"zip","url":null,"shasum":""} given.

I don't know if this is related to #3388810: Composer error: "Package drupal/cache_control_override's dist key should be specified as ... url: null given → .

I've seen this a couple times since this project moved from gitlab.com to git.drupalcode.org. Removing the dist key from the composer.lock file was the only way I found to resolve it. Not sure there's anything this project can do about it.
