Hi @nathanhealea,
Sure you can edit the text format > filter and disable the default output and then add the footnotes group block instead. There is also a JS option in there in case you have lazy-loaded content (paragraphs aren't by default but for example some blocks might be). Check out the homepage installation instructions for detaild/gotchas on that: https://www.drupal.org/project/footnotes β
There are also modules like Twig Tweak which you can use to output the footnotes block somewhere atypical in your theme if need be.
