The list of features included in Linkit which will not initially be in Drupal core on the project page → does not include anything about the custom form element included in the module.
We use the linkit form element in a custom FieldWidget plugin and there isn't really a good replacement in Drupal core (at least not that I know of).
Add something about the custom form element to the list of features not planned for Drupal core.
