For future generations

Hi I came across this module page and It struck me that we may be trying to do similar things. We are working with The National Archives in UK to ensure that local history/important website resources WILL be available for future generations and in decades to come (including sources/external links)
We have worked with the module developer for https://www.drupal.org/project/wayback_filter β†’ to complete it and an example can be seen at the test site here
But it would be good to see if we could do more to highlight visually if an old link no longer works and point people to the archive.org version

Would value your views or a zoom chat

@artatac. Thank you for reaching out. This sounds like a great project you are working on. Thanks for bringing the wayback filter to my attention, I had no idea it existed.

Node link report can scan all links on a rendered page, so it would be agnostic about whether it is a wayback link or not. Often the report block is only shown to editors but there is no reason it could not be shown to the public if needed. It behaves like any other block.

The results of the report are cached so you can set the expiration higher so it is not scanning so often.

The catch though is that this is a per page scan that does not aggregate anywhere. You might be better served by the linky module β†’ , which turns every external link into an entity so you can update the destination of a link across all its instances around a site. It also has tools to scan them periodically and surface 404 and redirects.

I am happy to discuss more or on zoom. I reached out to you... at least I think it is you on Drupal Slack.

@artatac and I had a zoom. He has some great ideas and uses. Most of the direction is likely better served by a adding a module to the linky ecosytem that replaces external links with a link to the wayback when the original goes 404.
