Forums within groups?

Problem/Motivation

I have migrated my site from D8 to D10, Groups 8.x-1.x to 2.2.2. I am trying to figure out the group and forum functionality, which seems to have changed. Your main module page lists the following example:

Classes on a school website. With a teacher as the administrator, students as the members and the content as the learning material. Articles in the Group are created by the teacher and only visible to the students in the Group. Forums created in the Group are safe places to discuss the class as they are only accessible to the teacher and the students.

My question: is the 'Group Forum' module still needed to add a forum / forums to the group? Or to restrict access to the group's forum(s)? Or is this functionality within the Group module now?

The problem is acute since Group Forum does not seem to be getting updates any more. Its maintainer has said that:

we're not using the forum module anywhere, I can't really help with maintenance much, especially because I'm not familiar with the group module beyond version 1, yet.

I am using group v3 (3.3.3) and would also be interested in having forums be part of groups, with restrictions on forum access based on group membership/roles.
