Create a hook for adding columns / performing calculations

Problem/Motivation

It would be really nice to have a hook that allows us to add columns for things like getting the value of a taxonomy term label based on the stored term ID or performing some sort of math calculation; that allows these tables to be used in Views without needing to perform as many joins.
