I'm putting this as a task because I honestly don't know if it's an actual bug or just something goofy with the site that this function is called when the field is empty. At any rate, the site is getting an error so I'm going to submit a patch in case anyone else runs into it.
Notice: Undefined offset: 1 in viewfield_field_formatter_view() (line 181 of /code/sites/all/modules/contrib/viewfield/viewfield.module).
