Fade main w/ thumbnail loop navigation

I would like to have the main stage do a fade transition, with thumbnails on a loop.

According to the docs:

Fade option with perPage > 1 will screw up.

And

If thumbnail display is type == 'loop', the main one must be type == 'loop' too, else incorrect syncing.

What needs to happen to support this?

I did an experiment and was able to do this with custom code, so it's not a limitation of the splide library.
