Branch versioning: 1.x or 3.x?

USWDS receives major update every 2-3 years:

3.0 was published on Apr 28, 2022 : https://github.com/uswds/uswds/releases/tag/v3.0.0
2.0 was published on Apr 4, 2019 : https://github.com/uswds/uswds/releases/tag/v2.0.0
1.0 was published on Feb 23, 2017 : https://github.com/uswds/uswds/releases/tag/v1.0.0

We currently implementing USWDS 3.x in a 1.0.x branch: https://git.drupalcode.org/project/ui_suite_uswds/-/tree/1.0.x

What will happen when USWDS 4.x will be published? We will need to tag a major version of our implementation, because of the upstream compatibility break, so we will need to create a new major branch. So, 2.x or a 4.x branch?

Would not be better to directly skip branch 1.x and 2.x and continue our current work on 3.x?

This is what we did on other projects:

Bootstrap 5 on https://git.drupalcode.org/project/ui_suite_bootstrap/-/tree/5.0.x/

Excellent idea! Created 3.0.x branch, updated gitlab to be default, and updated existing tickets.
