Fix build test on gitlabci

Problem/Motivation

We can't run the build test on gitlabci because of the layout used for contrib project. Core's build test does not support it. See 🐛 BuildTestBase makes assumptions it should not about the code layout Active

Proposed resolution

Going to work out how to fix it here and then recommend an upstream fix.
