I realise a site may have multiple sitemaps - in which case it may be appropriate to add all sitemaps, not just the default - although if the default is the index sitemap anyway, just that is fine. So consider this a starting point! It may not be appropriate to be too opinionated about what this functionality should do for all sites; so I suspect just the default might be enough anyway. If anyone wants anything more customised, they can always use
hook_module_implements_alter()
to disable this functionality? - Status changed to Closed: works as designed

Thanks for the patch! This has been discussed a few times in various issues however - please use search before opening a new one.
This module used to support robotstxt; the main reason for removal of the support is what you observed, see #3002208: Remove robotstxt module support → . I think a site builder will know to include the sitemap manually. If we implement a feature like this, we need something more powerful that can keep up with this module's flexibility.

Aw, sorry for wasting your time! Of course the issue queue filters default to only searching open issues, so I missed that long list of previous issues about this.
