Thank you for the patch. This will break compatibility with older versions of Drupal so I will not merge it on this branch; I want to keep the current branch working for sites that for whatever reason cannot upgrade yet. So, this change will most likely go to a new branch together with Drupal 10 support and I will make a release when Drupal 10 support is ready - hopefully soon.
