Apply improvements from 3230858 to 4.x

Problem/Motivation

Since the release of 2.0.0-alpha1, three issues have brought improvements to 2.0.x. These were actually supposed to result in a new 2.0.0 release, but unfortunately that never happened (see #3305103 📌 Create new 2.0.x Version Needs work ). With the release of 4.0.0-alpha1, which brings Drupal 10 and Simplenews 4 compatibility, the 2.0.x branch will probably become obsolete.

To seperate the corresponding changes, I will create an issue for each of these.

Proposed resolution

I hereby propose to apply the the improvements from [#3230858] Drupal 9 and Simplenews 3.x compatibility? → to the 4.x branch.

Remaining tasks

  • Merge changes from the original issue into 4.x.
  • Review and test these improvements in combination with simplenews 4
